Introduction to Haulage

Welcome to the area dedicated to issues that apply to the Haulage Industry.  You will also find general health and safety guidance in the 'A-Z'. This information is relevant to all industry groups regardless of activity.  From here you can also access our 'Ask the Expert Facility'.

The dictionary definition of haulage being, "A firm or person that transports goods by road".

We have tried to represent issues, regulations and guidance in a way, which will be clear and easy to follow. Together with other sections we hope this will enable you to work more safely in your industry.

Workplace transport is the second biggest cause of fatal accidents in British workplaces.

Accidents also have an impact on company costs: enterprises that adopt a road safety policy generally reduce their operating costs as a result. Furthermore, road accidents involving heavy good vehicles are damaging to the image and public acceptance of road haulage.

For all these reasons, a firm commitment from road transport enterprises is needed to reduce the risks to your drivers.

Not only will you have employees to take care of but members of the public who frequent your premises making use of your services as well as contractors and visitors.

As well as the basic key regulations and Statutory requirements, we aim to provide content that is specific to your activities. All areas however should first be identified and risk assessed and hazards identified.  Risk assessment is the first point of call for all good health and safety management.

You will also find useful documentation in the 'Download' area, for:

  • Risk assessment,
  • Policy
  • Guidance and
  • Checklist

All content can be downloaded completed and then uploaded into your 'Document Manager' area creating a Health and Safety Portfolio for safe keeping.

Should you have any specific queries you can always 'Ask the Expert'.
